What Is a Class 7 Vehicle?

Class 7 covers goods vehicles with a design gross weight between 3,000kg and 3,500kg. This includes most transit-style vans, large pickups, and light commercial vehicles used by tradespeople and delivery drivers.

If your van is under 3,000kg design gross weight, it falls into Class 4 (the same as a car) and the £54.85 maximum applies.

What's Different About a Class 7 MOT?

The Class 7 test covers the same core areas as a car MOT, but with additional checks specific to commercial vehicles:

  • Load-bearing components and chassis integrity
  • Additional braking performance requirements
  • Coupling devices (if the van is used for towing)
  • Emission limits based on commercial engine specs
  • Rear markings if required for the vehicle size

Typical Prices

  • National chains: £35–£50, with online deals available
  • Independent garages: £40–£58
  • Main dealers: typically the full maximum

Not all MOT test stations can test Class 7 vehicles — check the station is authorised for your vehicle class before booking.

Business Use Considerations

If you use the van for business, the MOT cost is a tax-deductible expense. You can also claim the cost of any repairs needed to pass the MOT as a business expense.

Sole traders and limited companies operating vans need to keep MOT certificates as part of their vehicle maintenance records.

How to Save on a Van MOT

  • Book at national chains with a commercial vehicle bay — they often have competitive pricing
  • Get the van serviced and the MOT at the same time — bundle discounts are common
  • Compare prices across at least 3 garages before booking
  • Avoid peak demand periods and book midweek where possible
