How Long Does an MOT Take?

How Long Does a Standard MOT Take?

A standard MOT test takes 45 to 60 minutes for a typical car. Motorcycles are usually quicker — around 20–30 minutes. Vans and larger vehicles can take up to 90 minutes.

This is purely the test itself. Add waiting time if the garage is busy.

What Affects the Duration?

Vehicle type

Larger, more complex vehicles take longer. A Class 4 car is faster than a Class 7 large van.

Condition of the vehicle

A well-maintained car in good condition takes less time. If the tester discovers borderline items that need closer inspection, the test will take longer.

Garage workload

If the garage has multiple bays and testers, your car may be taken in quickly. A busy single-bay garage could mean a wait even after you've dropped the car off.

Retests

A partial retest (after a repair) takes less time than a full test — usually 20–30 minutes — since only the failed items need rechecking.

Should I Wait or Drop the Car Off?

Waiting makes sense if:

  • The garage has a comfortable waiting area
  • You need the car that day
  • You don't have a way to get back

Dropping off makes sense if:

  • You have a way to get to work or home
  • The garage is busy and there may be a queue
  • The car might need minor repairs that delay the test

Most garages are happy with either approach — just discuss it when you book.

Can I Watch My MOT?

In theory, you can observe the test — there's no rule preventing it. In practice, many garages prefer you to wait in the waiting area for safety reasons. You can ask when you book.

How Long Does an MOT Certificate Last?

An MOT certificate is valid for 12 months. You can get your car tested up to one calendar month before the expiry date and the new certificate will run from the old expiry — so you don't lose any days.

MOT Booking Tips

  • Book in the morning — if repairs are needed, the garage has time to fix and retest in the same day.
  • Allow buffer time — don't book the MOT on a day you urgently need the car, in case it fails.
  • Book in advance — especially near the end of the MOT period in March and September when garages are very busy.
