How Much Does an MOT Cost in 2024?

Maximum MOT Fee

The maximum fee for an MOT test is set by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). As of 2024:

  • Cars (Class 4): £54.85
  • Motorcycles (Class 1 & 2): £29.65
  • Vans and light commercial (Class 7): £58.60

Many garages charge less than the maximum — it's common to find MOTs for £30–£40 for cars, especially as a loss leader to attract repair work.

How to Find Cheap MOTs

  • Compare prices online — search for MOT centres in your area and compare prices.
  • Check national chains — Halfords, Kwik Fit, and ATS often run MOT deals.
  • Look for MOT + service bundles — many garages offer discounts if you combine your MOT with an annual service.
  • Book online — some garages offer a discount for online bookings.
  • Council test centres — some local councils run MOT centres at competitive prices.

Is There a Retest Fee?

If your vehicle fails and you get it repaired at the same garage, the partial retest is usually free if done within 10 working days. If you take it elsewhere, you'll pay for a full retest.

Can I Negotiate the Price?

The MOT test fee is the fee — you can't negotiate it down. However, if repairs are needed, you can always get quotes from other garages before committing.
