What Does an MOT Check?
What Is an MOT Test?
An MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is an annual inspection required by law for most vehicles over three years old in the UK. It checks that your vehicle meets minimum road safety and environmental standards.
What's Checked During an MOT?
The MOT test covers a wide range of components. Here are the main areas:
Lights and Electrical Equipment
All lights are checked — headlamps (including aim), brake lights, indicators, fog lights, hazard lights, registration plate lights, and reflectors. The horn is also tested.
Steering and Suspension
The tester checks for excessive play in the steering, worn ball joints, damaged bushings, leaking shock absorbers, and broken springs. Power steering systems are also inspected for leaks and operation.
Brakes
Brake performance is measured on a roller brake tester. Pads, discs, drums, hoses, pipes, the handbrake, and brake fluid are all inspected. The braking balance between sides is checked.
Tyres and Wheels
Tyres must have at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tread width. The tester checks for cuts, bulges, and that the correct size and type of tyre is fitted.
Bodywork and Structure
Corrosion or damage that affects the structural integrity of the vehicle is checked. Sharp edges that could injure pedestrians are also a fail point. The boot, bonnet, and doors must open and close properly.
Exhaust and Emissions
The exhaust system is checked for leaks and security. Emissions are measured against limits for your vehicle's age and fuel type. Diesel vehicles have a stricter smoke test. Catalytic converters and DPFs must be present and working.
Windscreen and Wipers
The windscreen is checked for damage in the driver's line of sight. Wiper blades must clear the screen effectively. The washer system must work properly.
Seat Belts and Seats
All seat belts are checked for condition, security, and operation. The driver's seat must adjust and lock properly. Airbag warning lights are checked.
Registration Plates
Plates must be correctly displayed, legible, and conform to the legal format.
What's NOT Checked?
The MOT does not check the engine, clutch, gearbox, or general mechanical condition. It also doesn't check the air conditioning, sat nav, or bodywork dents that don't affect safety.
How Long Does an MOT Take?
A typical MOT test takes 45 minutes to an hour. You can wait at the garage or leave and come back.
